farm-y march + april

* kinda like a journal, no responsibility taken for grammar, punctuation, spelling mistakes… or the lack of upper case letters *

you don’t see this very often…on the farm

grandma’s kitchen was the centre of activity…the wood-stove… grandpa’s daybed.. where he’d have a mid-morning nap after being in the barn from the wee hours…the room defined ‘party in the kitchen’…good times

this is my dad and uncle bill… dad may as well be a fourn… he’s a transplanted city-boy …i don’t think fourns knew what to make of this fun-ster..i’m sure they still don’t…they just look at him..and wait

never shy…dad is always one to laugh …at himself first…make a sly comment…now you all know where i get it from…then look at you as if to say..who..me? yep…dadhis cross-dressing is legendary…this is only the tip of the iceberg…and just look at the influence he’s had on the family…see below…don’t let fourns fool you…they’re willing participants

on this day…uncle bill..a kind man who tends to keep to himself…tolerated dads shenanigans …just barely

and by the looks of the coffeepot and stove in the background… it’s about 1963

bacon…fournie style

it’s long been said…there’s always food at fourns…it’s absolutely true

at this particular reunion…the main was delivered first thing… embers from the all-night campfire were dropped in a pit and the spit started turning at 730am…that was a good morning

the embers were from a pile of wood that my uncle ken had taken as payment for an invoice 20 years earlier…that’s just the kind of guy he was…the wood had been sitting in the barn…drying out…and…was…perfect…of course, the rest of us harassed him about his money going up in smoke…that’s just the kind of kids we are…as usual, he just giggled…it’s all good

this little piggy…roasted all day and i can’t even believe how much was left over…either we weren’t as hungry as we usually are..or there was more to his 90 pounds than we thought…however… they were the best pulled pork sandwiches ever…not to mention fire-roasted crackling…yum!

i especially love the fact that he was laid out on a well-used old table from the shop…uncle ken owned shedden farm equipment for 35 years….with rusty tools close at hand…this from a family full of nurses..ah well…barbecue is guys work

l to r: cousin trent, brother rick, trent’s dad jim…hidden...dad in front…and his best pal, uncle ken…aka pete and re-pete

*sigh* how do i explain this?

the short answer is…it’s fourns

the longer answer is..the 2nd weekend in july is fournie family weekend…held in the rhubarb capital of ontario…SHEDDEN…look it upit’s got a pretty colourful past…for the record..we  shedden…it’s the home of our uncle ken …who devastatingly passed away in 2008, but is well represented here in all his glory..back row, 2nd from left…looks pretty comfy, doesn’t he?…he is

anyhoot..back to the explanation… at any family reunion there are the requisite games…but none so fun as what those creative fournies come up with…quick…cheap…completely embarrassing…the best kind of fun ever! this was a take on musical chairs…the only caveat was that you couldn’t get tossed out…much to bill’s dismay…my aunt kate took a very quick spin in the local charity shop…picked only the best stuff…proceeded to fill a big garbage bag…and so began the best bang for her minimal bucks

i’m not sure if there was any music…probably just some off-tune vocalizing…definitely no harmonies here

hmmm…aunt kate and i…are strangely missing

see? fourns…merry pranksters..and that’s only a few of ’em

back row: uncle bob, uncle ken, nephews greg + steve, mom, nephew rueben..grandma’s so proud..cousins kolleen, kathleen, tash, mike + girlfriend (sorry!), aunt shirlee, cousins jeff, suzanne, dustin and bill

front row: cousins alexandrea, brent…witches hat… marshall, alison, rachel, collin and the infamous aunt jeanne

uncle dave, rob + rick sept 62

these are my brothers rob ..with the goat…+ rick…our uncle dave is in the push chair…and our grandma …dave’s mom…is at the back door

grandma + mom were pregnant…with my uncle dave and my brother al… at the same time…there’s 25 years between my mom + dave…her youngest brother…dave was born an uncle…yeeeesh!

come to think of it, our cousin/niece karen was about 6 when dave was born…double yeeeesh!
